Verna Joan Kessler, age 73, formerly of Spring Glen, passed away Friday, November 1, 2013 at The Manor at Susquehanna Village, Millersburg after a long exhausting fight with multiple sclerosis. She was born on Wednesday, April 10, 1940, in Upper Mahantongo Twp, a daughter of the late Cloyd D Mattern, Sr and Verna M Snyder Mattern. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Sacramento. Her husband Leonard I Kessler passed away in 2005. She was also preceded in death by two brothers Cloyd Mattern, Jr and Ray Mattern; and a sister Esther Schwartz. She is survived by two daughters Beverly A Hockenberry and her husband Jim of Shermansdale and Holly J Jury and her husband Chris of Elizabethville; a granddaughter Cortney Koppenhaver of Spring Glen; a grandson Colby Jury of Elizabethville; six great grandchildren; and two sisters Ruby Smith and Lena Schwartz. Funeral services were held at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Sacramento, on Thursday, November 7, 2013, at 11:00 am, with Rev. Raymond Holland officiating. A viewing was held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Thursday at the church. Burial was made in St. Paul's Cemetery, Sacramento. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, was in charge of arrangements.
