Dr. Robert S Bowman, age 86 of 1449 W Maple Street, Valley View, Pa and 5 Bayard Road, Pittsburgh, Pa, died Monday, May 24, 2004 at his Pittsburgh home. Born in Valley View, June 26, 1917, he was the son of the late Ray H. and Carrie M. Starr Bowman. He was a graduate of the former Hegins Township High School; a 1940 graduate of Penn State University with a B.S. degree in Agriculture and Biological Chemistry; a 1945 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Master of Organic Chemistry; and a 1950 graduate of University of Pittsburgh with a PhD in Organic Chemistry. He was a research chemist in the Pittsburgh area and retired in 1985 as Executive Vice President of Carnegie Mellon Institute of Research. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley View; a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemists holding national and local offices in both groups; the American Association for the Advancement of Science; the Pittsbugh Catalysis Society; chairman of the Mellon Institute group involved in the merger of Mellon Institute and Carnegie Tech. He was an instrument rated pilot and officer in the Tech Flying Club at Carnegie Mellon University; former president of the Amberson Towers Condominium Council; and instructor for Pennsylvania 55 Alive Program and a clarinetist with the former Wilkinsburg Symphony. He was preceded in death by two brothers, V. Eugene and Russell A. Bowman. Surviving are one brother, Richard C. Bowman, Sanborn, NY, one sister, Alice K. Bowman, Rockville, MD, his nieces and nephews and his friends including Hope Leyton from Pittsburgh. A memorial service wsd held Friday, June 4, 2004 at 5:00 p.m. from Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley View. The Rev. Carl Shankweiler officiated. Burial was made at the convenience of the family.
