Click here to view the Video Tribute for Richard. Richard J Spotts, age 74, of 1056 E Main Street, Hegins, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at his residence. He was born on Tuesday, March 23, 1937, in Dalmatia a son of the late Robert J and Loy E Wiest Spotts. He was a 1955 graduate of the former Mahanoy Joint High School, a 1959 graduate of Lock Haven State University, and received his Masters degree from Penn State University in 1970. He retired as the superintendent of the Tri-Valley School District. He was also a former teacher, football, basketball, and wrestling coach at Tri-Valley High School. After his retirement he operated Dick's Frame Shop, Hegins. Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ, Hegins; where he served on the church council. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Rural School Districts, the Schuylkill Economic Development Council; a founding member of the Schuylkill Community Education Council; and the former chairman of the Tri-Valley Charities Annual Fund Drive. He is survived by his wife Elinor L (Wolfe) Spotts, to whom he was married for 56 years. He is also survived by three sons Jeffrey A Spotts and his wife Janice of Jamestown, RI, Jonathan J Spotts and his wife Teresa of Schuylkill Haven, and Douglas L Spotts of and his wife Kathy of St. Charles, IL; seven grandchildren; and a brother Vance C Spotts of Palmyra. Memorial services were held at Friedens United Church of Christ, Hegins, on Sunday, February 19, 2012, at 2:00 pm, with Rev. Claude Schach officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, was in charge of arrangements.
