Nellie "Mildred" Merwine, age 89, of 947 Deep Creek Road, Weishample, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Manor Care, Pottsville. She was born on Tuesday, October 5, 1920, in Derby, Conn., a daughter of the late Anthony Skuches and Mary (Digilis) Skuches. She was an Army veteran of World War II; where she met her husband of 59 years. She was very proud of her Lithuanian heritage. She loved flowers, gardening, all crafts especially counted cross stitch, puzzles, farmers markets, an avid reader of mystery and love stories, she loved exhibiting at local fairs, decorating for the holidays and the four seasons. She was a photographer in the Army and enjoyed taking photos of her family. She loved entering cooking contests and going for long walks with her husband. Mildred always had a positive attitude and accepted whatever life dealt her. She called herself the "Survivor". She was a member of St. John's "Kimmel's" Church, Deep Creek Road, Ashland. She was also a member of the former Hegins Garden Club; past president of the former Barry PTA; a 4H Leader; a former news reporter for the Valley Citizen; and a member of the Tri-Valley Senior Citizens. Mildred served as a host for an International Foreign Exchange Student. Her husband Palmer Stanley Merwine passed away in 2004. She is survived by a son, George E Merwine and his wife Patricia of Williamstown; two daughters Maryjean Neumeister and her husband James of Hegins and Adele M Shepard of Schuylkill Haven; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. John's "Kimmel's" Church, Deep Creek Road, Ashland on Tuesday June 8, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Mark Rothermel officiating. A viewing was held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Burial with Military Honors was made in St. John's Cemetery, Ashland.
