Lawrence A "Sonny" Carl, age 85, of 342 Fearnot Road, Sacramento, passed away Monday, July 18, 2011 at the Orwigsburg Center, Orwigsburg; where he was a guest since March 4th. He was born on Wednesday, June 9, 1926, in Hegins, a son of the late Arthur D and Jennie M Kahler Carl. He was a 1945 graduate of the former Hubley Twp High School. He served in the US Army and was deployed to Japan during World War II; arriving on the last day of the war. Sonny remained in Japan for one year during the US occupation. He retired as a truck driver for the former Kocher Coal Company, Valley View. He was a member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church, Fearnot. He was also a member of American Legion Post 575, Valley View. Sonny enjoyed chatting with his friends every morning at Traci's Place. He loved to collect coins and toy trucks; enjoyed woodworking; loved his family, animals, and chocolate. He was preceded in death by a sister Arlene Gilbert. He is survived by his wife Edna I (Mausser) Carl, to whom he was married for 66 years. He is also survived by a daughter Wanda L Reiner and her husband Henry of Klingerstown; two granddaughters Melanie A Minnich and her husband Gary of Lititz, Michelle E Eshelman and her husband Gary of Hegins; a grandson Keith L Reiner and his wife Jennifer of Lancaster; two great grandsons Tyler D Minnich and Austin H Minnich both of Lititz; a sister Eleanor Latsha and her husband George of Manheim; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at 11:00 am, with Rev. William Danis officiating. A viewing was held from 9:30 am to 11:00 am on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors was made in St. Peter's Cemetery, Fearnot.
