Obituary

Harry L "Pete" Smith, age 80, of 325 S Goodspring Road, Hegins, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Golden Living York Terrace Nursing Center, Pottsville.

He was born on Thursday, April 26, 1934, in Lavelle, a son of the late Harry L Smith, Sr and the late Alice R Felker Smith.

He was a 1952 graduate of the former Butler Twp High School.

Pete ran a farm truck market route in Minersville and retired as a partner in Carl and Smith Coal Delivery.

He was a member of Friedens Lutheran Church, Hegins; where he was a former member of the church council.

He was also a member of the Hegins Park Association and the Hegins Fire Company.

Pete enjoyed hunting and camping. He was an avid fan of Penn State Football, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were a brother Jack Smith; and three sisters Janet Young, Susanna Schwartz, and Kay Marlow.

He is survived by his wife Joan M Kieffer Smith, to whom he was married for 58 years.

He is also survived by two daughters, Donna R Ludwig and her husband Thomas of Weishample, and Cindy A Herring and her husband Rick of Hegins; a grandson Ryan Herring of Hegins; three granddaughters, Christel Wenrich of Bernville, Amanda Ludwig of Pittsburgh, and Bethany Ludwig of Donaldson; two sisters, Lucille Miller of Linglestown and Frieda Johnson of Lavelle; a brother Frank Smith of Lavelle; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at 11:00 am, with Rev. Warren Egebo officiating.

A viewing was held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial was made in Friedens Cemetery, Hegins.
