George Harrison Schwalm, age 90, of The Manor at Susquehanna Village, Millersburg, formerly of Valley View, passed away Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at The Manor. He was born on Friday, November 14, 1919 in Valley View, a son of the late Gurney Schwalm and the late Mary (Shadle) Schwalm. He was a graduate of the former Hegins Twp High School. He retired as a clerk for Midway Supermarket, Valley View. He and his wife had owned and operated a grocery store in Valley View. George enjoyed providing mobile grocery service to many area residence. He had also worked for the former Bud Kimmel General Store in Valley View. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley View. He was also a member of the Tri-Valley Senior Citizens, a member and former director of the Johannes Schwalm Historical Assoc., Inc, and a life member of the Valley View Fire Company. George enjoyed researching the Schwalm genealogy. He had traveled to the Schwalm homeland in Germany while doing his research. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Evelyn Schwalm on Dec. 13, 2007. He was also preceded in death by three brothers Wilson, Frank, and Mark Schwalm; and two sisters Mary Jane Runkle and Emma Stokes. He is survived by a sister, Catherine Warfield of Schoolyard Square and several nieces and nephews. Memorial Services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley View, on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Carl Shankweiler and Rev. Curtis Zemencik officiating. Burial was made in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Valley View. Memorial contributions can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 153, Valley View PA 17983.
