Click here to view the Video Tribute for Elmer Elmer Robert Maurer, age 87, of 683 Deep Creek Road Hegins, passed away Monday, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He was born in Barry Twp, Schuylkill County on October 16, 1919, a son of the late Charles E and Dora (Kessler) Maurer. He was a 1936 graduate of the former Hegins Twp High School. He served in the U.S. Army in the 509th Paratroop Battalion during WW II; receiving a Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars for his service. He was a poultry farmer and had retired from the former Hegins Precision, Division of Penn Reel, Hegins. He was a member of Friedens Lutheran Church, Hegins for 55 years; serving on the Church Council for 50 years. He was also a member of American Legion Post 575 and VFW Post 8237 both of Valley View, and the Tri-Valley Senior Citizens. He was a former member of the Pennsylvania Farmers Association. He was a former Barry Twp Supervisor; serving for 32 years. His wife Ruby V (Schwartz) Maurer passed away in 1990. He was also preceded in death by three brothers Warren, Alvin, and John Maurer He is survived by a son Gary E Maurer and his wife Deborah of Allentown; two grandchildren Brad M Maurer of Newport Coast, Calf. and Tracey A McGrath and her husband Brian of Sicklerville NJ; a step granddaughter Rita M Howard of Macungie; two great grandchildren Courtney and Lauren McGrath; three sisters Lottie Bossler of Pine Grove, Hazel Minnich of Friedensburg, and Alma Barnhardt of Valley View; five brothers Ralph Maurer of Fountain, George Maurer of Ashland, Irvin "Earl" Maurer of Idaho, Harry Maurer of Simsonville SC, and Harold Maurer of Manheim; and by his companion Betty Miller of Hegins. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 21st, at Friedens Lutheran Church, Hegins, with Rev. Warren Egebo officiating. A viewing was held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the church. Burial with Military Honors was made in Friedens Cemetery, Hegins. Memorial contributions can be made to Friedens Lutheran Church Building Fund or Friedens Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund, P.O.
