Obituary

Dr. Donald V Malick, age 89, Hegins, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2015 at his residence.

He was born on Monday, February 22, 1926, in Hegins, a son of the late George Allen Malick and the late Blanche Ressler Malick.

Following his graduation from Hegins Twp High School in 1944, Dr Malick enlisted in the Army Air Corps Cadet Program, serving in that capacity for two years. After his discharge from the Air Corps he entered Lebanon Valley College and graduated in 1949 with a BS Degree in biology and chemistry. He then entered Hahnamann Medical College in Philadelphia and graduated in 1953. After graduation he entered an internship program at the Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg. He returned to Temple University in Philadelphia and received post graduate training in Bronchoesophogotogy, after which he became a staff member at Good Samaritan Hospital, Pottsville, where he established the Bronchoscopy Department. He started his medical practice in Hegins in 1954. He also joined the staff at the Pottsville Hospital and served as a consultant at the Ashland Hospital from 1954 to 1957. He assisted Dr Tihansky in general surgery from 1954 to 1972. In 1973 he joined Dr Wahab and served as assistant in general surgery. Dr Malick was a Medical Examiner for the Federal Aviation Association for 40 years. During his practice he delivered 4800 newborns and was called to assist in approximately 15 mine accidents where he personally entered the mines to the scene of the accidents. In 1993 he was invited by then President George Bush to attend the dedication of the Flying Hospital.

He was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ, Hegins, where he served on the consistory.

He was also a member of F and M Valley Lodge 797, Valley View and the Harrisburg Consistory. He was a member of the medical ski patrol at Sharp Mountain and Big Boulder Ski Resorts.

Donald enjoyed traveling with his wife, woodworking, swimming, local history, Civil War History, and skiing throughout the world.

He was a private pilot and had owned a gyrocoptor.

His wife, Dorothy Kuntz Malick passed away in 2008. He was also preceded in death by his parents; by a brother George C A Malick; and by a sister, Hazel Konjarvich.

He is survived by daughter, Yvonne M Deiter and her husband Scott of Clarksville, MD; two sons, Ronald C Malick and his wife Sydnie of Concord, NC, and Randall T Malick and his wife Connie of Center Valley; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and two nephews.

Masonic services were held at the Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, at 1:30 pm on Sunday, July 26, 2015. Viewing was held from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at the Buffington-Reed Funeral Home and on Monday, July 27, 2015, from 10 to 11 am at Friedens United Church of Christ, Hegins.

Funeral services were held on Monday at 11 am at Friedens United Church of Christ, with Rev Michael Klahr and Rev Claude Schach officiating.

Burial with Military Honors was made in Fountain Community Cemetery.
