Charles Lindberg "Lindy" Runkle, age 76, of 1532 W Maple Street, Valley View, died Monday, April 12, 2004, at the Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center, Tremont, Pa. He was born on May 7, 1927, in Spring Glen, Pa., a son of the late Chester G. and N. Pauline (Schwalm) Runkle. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a coal miner and a mechanic and retired as a Driver Inspector for the New Cumberland Army Depot. He had also worked at the former Olmstead Air Force Base, Middletown, Pa. He was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Spring Glen, Pa., where he was a former Church Secretary for over 40 years and a former Trustee, Lay Leader, and member of the Cemetery Board. He was also a member of F&AM Valley Lodge 797 of Valley View and the Harrisburg Consistory. Surviving are his wife of 58 years Irene L. (Long) Runkle; a son Larry A Runkle of Gales Ferry, CT; two daughters Diane C Harner of Phoenixville, Pa and Wendy B Mervine of Bel Air, MD; a brother James L Runkle of Spring Glen, Pa; a sister Dorothy L Runkle of Harrisburg; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Daniel H Runkle. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2004, from St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Spring Glen, Pa, with the Rev. William Danis officiating. Masonic services were held at 10 a.m. at the church by F&AM Valley Lodge 797. A viewing was held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday a the church. Burial was made in St. Mark's Cemetery, Spring Glen, Pa., with military honors by Gratz VFW Post 2385. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Spring Glen PA 17978.
