Audrey Murray Mayer, born Ruth Audrey Murray, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital of Venice in Venice, Florida. She was 97.

Audrey was born on August 1, 1928, in Manhattan, New York, to Leo Jerome Murray and Ruth Fredricka Dunton Murray. She grew up in Bronxville, New York, and graduated from Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, in 1947. She attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Economics. Later in life, she earned a Computer Science Associate Degree from Northern Essex Community College in Massachusetts.

Audrey was intelligent, capable, and deeply practical. She excelled at finding out-of-the-box solutions to problems. Before marriage, she worked at New York Life. Later, she put her financial skills to use through tax-related work with the IRS, H&R Block, and AARP. She was also a homemaker and devoted much of her life to caring for family and friends.

She was first married to James E. Gorman, and together they raised four sons: John E. Gorman, Thomas H. Gorman and his wife Michele Julian, William J. Gorman and his wife Nancy M. Simmonds Gorman, and Robert A. Gorman. Audrey later married Edward H. Mayer, who predeceased her, and lovingly welcomed his children into her family: Bradley L. Mayer and his wife Mary Ann Mayer, and Susan C. Mayer.

Audrey was a proud and loving grandmother to Sarasvati "Sara" Gorman; Thomas H. S. Gorman and wife Elizabeth Wagner Gorman; William "Liam" W. Gorman; James P. Gorman; Michael R. Gorman; and Marissa E. Gorman. She was also a great-grandmother to Thomas H. S. Gorman, Jr. and Embergale E. Gorman. She was predeceased by her brother, Paul C. Murray.

In her later years, Audrey lived in Bird Bay Village and at Tuscan Gardens of Venetia Bay in Venice, Florida. There, she formed many friendships with residents and staff and was deeply loved for her positive attitude, caring and supportive nature, advocacy for others, lively sense of humor, and unmistakable impishness. She was genuinely interested in everyone, and when she smiled at you with a twinkle in her eye, it made your day better.

A central and enduring part of Audrey's life was Alcoholics Anonymous. She was a devoted member of AA for 48 years and maintained her sobriety from January 1, 1978, forward. She attended meetings in person for many years and later continued faithfully by Zoom. She was widely loved in that community and was regarded by many as an icon.

Audrey also cherished her summers in Ogunquit, Maine, where she stayed at Littlefield's Village campground. She made many dear friends there and especially loved walking on the beach and the Marginal Way.

Audrey will be remembered for her intelligence, resilience, humor, generosity, and the steady support she gave to the many people whose lives she touched. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 2300 E Main Street, Sacramento, PA on Friday, April 17th, 2026 at 11 AM. Audrey will be laid to rest next to her late husband Edward immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Audrey's memory may be made to Black Cat Rescue of Boston or the St. Francis Animal Rescue of Venice.
