Obituary

Pearl E. Schadel, a resident of the Polk Personal Care Center, Millersburg died peacefully Saturday November 5, 2022.

She was born July 5, 1925, in Valley View, the next to youngest and last surviving of 13 children of John and Agnes Troutman Blyler.

She was a graduate of the former Hegins Township High School Class of 1943 and became a beautician, later becoming the supervisor of the clipping service at the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association, Harrisburg.

Pearl was an active member of Salem Church of Rough and Ready, and enjoyed helping with the dandelion dinners and so much more.

She and Afton traveled the world and experienced so many adventures in their years together. They embarked on an 81 day, 4300 mile bicycle trip from Oregon to Virginia using historic trails and secondary roads. In 1985, they sold their property in Harrisburg and became full time Airstreamers for 8 1/2 years. They traveled all 50 states, parts of Canada, spent a winter in Guadalajara, Mexico and spent 3 weeks in China as guests of the Chinese Government as Afton lectured on water resource protection. Together, they visited seven countries in Europe, toured Australia and New Zealand and took 2 trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and Iceland.

In 2003, they sold their log cabin in the Mahantongo Valley and moved to the Polk Foundation in Millersburg. Pearl loved living at the Polk. She was very active in all the programs offered throughout each day. She was an avid Phillies fan!

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Afton V. Schadel on January 19, 2011. Pearl and Afton tragically lost their son Vance Allen, at age 21 in a car accident in 1969. also preceding her in death were brothers, Roy, Elmer, Joseph, Ralph, Dan, Albert, and Archie; sisters Maude Masser, Grace Troup-Wolfgang, Alma Umholtz, Iva Carl, Anna Hoffman.

Pearl is survived by nieces and nephews, other family members, and many many friends whom she dearly loved.

A celebration of life and ressurrection will be held at Salem Church of Rough and Ready, Rough and Ready, on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 1:00 pm, with Rev. Mark E Mantz officiating.

A visitation will be held from 12:00 pm until the time of service.

Burial will be made in Salem Cemetery, Rough and Ready.
