Max A Schlegel, age 85, of 415 W Maple Street, Valley View, passed away Friday, June 8, 2012 at the Schuylkill Medical Center- E Norwegian, Pottsville. He was born on Saturday, April 16, 1927, in Valley View, a son of the late Allen and Ruth Troutman Schlegel. He was a 1947 graduate of the former Hegins Twp High School. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a self employed carpenter. After he retired he opened an antique store in Valley View; which he owned until 2002. Max enjoyed reading, and buying and selling antiques. He was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ, Hegins; where he was past deacon and elder. He was also a 32 degree Mason; a member and past Worshipful Master of F&AM Lodge 797, Valley View; a member of AASR Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, USA, of Harrisburg; the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Harrisburg; the Royal Arch Chapter 221 of Tremont; the Tall Cedars of Lebanon of Millersburg; Shriners International; the Schuylkill County Shrine Club; VFW Post 8237 of Valley View; and the Gratz Historical Society. He was preceded in death by his wife, June L Daubert Schlegel in 2009. He was also preceded in death by a brother Palmer Schlegel. He is survived by a daughter Candice D Deppen and her husband Stephen of Valley View; a granddaughter Heather R Hillard and her husband Ben of Enola; a grandson Michael A Deppen and his wife Kim of Landisville; three great grandsons Max A Deppen of Landisville, Truman M Hillard of Enola, and Nathan O Hillard of Enola; two great granddaughters Ava G Deppen and Katie G Deppen both of Landisville; two sisters Geraldine Brubaker of Valley View and Josephine Lenker of Millersburg; and several nieces and nephews. Masonic services were held at the Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, on Friday, June 15, 2012, at 2:00 pm. Memorial services will follow the Masonic service with Rev. Claude Schach officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA, 18 Wertz Drive, Pine Grove PA 17963.
