Martha I. Peifer, age 96, of Ridge Road, Pitman, passed away Friday, February 23, 2024 at Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital, Coal Township.

She was born on Monday, July 18, 1927, in Pitman, a daughter of the late George W. Keim and the late Sylva (Schaeffer) Keim.

She was a 1944 graduate of the former Hegins Twp High School.

Martha and her late husband ran the family farm and had a produce stand at Shamokin Curb Market. She also was a part time custodian at the Mahantongo Elementary School with her late husband.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Pitman, where she was the financial secretary for thirty years, served on several WELCA committees, the funeral committee, and planning committee. She was also very involved with quilting committee.

Martha enjoyed traveling; she and her late husband visited all of the US states, except Alaska. After her husband's death, she traveled with her cousin to several foreign countries. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking, baking, and spending time with her family.

Her husband, Arthur James "Jim" Peifer, passed away February 25, 1994. She was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Harry L. Keim, and a brother, Clarence W. Keim.

She is survived by a daughter, Gloria I. James of Pitman; a grandson, Jason W. James of Pitman; a niece, Carole G. Keim Ney of Pitman; and several other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services will be held at St. James Lutheran Church, Pitman, on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at 11:00 am, with Rev. Mark Rothermel officiating.

A viewing will be held from 9:30 am to 11:00 am on Wednesday at the church.

Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Rough and Ready.
