Richard William Maurer, Sr. passed away on May 27, 2017 at the age of 94 in Fort Myers, Florida. The son of the late Martha (Artz) Maurer and Mark Snyder Maurer, he was born in Hegins on November 17, 1922.
Mr. Maurer was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte Faye (Buffington) Maurer, to whom he was married for 64 years. Also preceding him in death were his sister Helen Maurer, an infant sister Carolyn, and grandson Parris Wood.
After graduating from Hegins Township High School, Mr. Maurer resided in the Hegins Valley nearly all his life, enjoying over 60 years at Maurer Orchards in Valley View. He had a very active life as a fruit grower, was extremely involved in the community, and had many friendships which spanned his lifetime.
As a young man he was an active Boy Scout and in high school a talented trumpeter winning state awards. He always enjoyed classical music. During his lifetime Mr. Maurer was a member of the board of the Hegins Hubley Water Authority and was an active Rotarian, Mason, and Lion, serving as President in both Rotary and Lions. His service as a Rotarian was recognized with a Paul Harris Fellow award. He served as Treasurer of the Pottsville Club and for many years was Committeeman for the Republican Party. He belonged to Friedens United Church of Christ, Hegins. Most of all, he enjoyed the company of good friends almost every morning at Elsie's Restaurant!
In 2006, because of health issues, he moved to Illinois to be closer to family, and later to Fort Myers, Florida. He is survived by 2 children, son Richard Jr. of Williamsburg, Virginia, married to Marsha Maurer, and daughter Pamela of Fort Myers, Florida, married to Barry Slaughenhaupt. Mr. Maurer is survived by 4 grandchildren, Richard Maurer III, Anne Maurer, Mauriel Blakeley and Parris"Ping"Maurer. He will be greatly missed.
Visitation was held from 10am to 11am on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View.
Masonic service were conducted by members of Valley Lodge 797 at 10:45 am.
A memorial service celebrating both Richard and Charlotte's lives was held at 11 am with Rev. Tom Maurer officiating.
Burial was made in Friedens Cemetery, Hegins.
