Obituary

Jadwiga Maurer, scholar, writer, and Holocaust survivor, died October 16, 2012, at the Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana IL.
Jadwiga was born in Kielce, Poland on September 24, 1930, to Baruch and Hanna Graubard.
Arriving in Germany with her immediate family as displaced persons after World War II, Jadwiga received her Ph.D. from the University of Munich with highest honors. In 1956, she married American Warren R. Maurer in Fulda, Germany. Warren and Jadwiga moved to the United States, where she subsequently held faculty positions at the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Indiana, Bloomington; and the University of Kansas, Lawrence; where she was a professor in the Slavic Department for three decades.
In addition to her scholarship, which included a groundbreaking biography of Adam Mickiewicz, Poland's greatest poet, she won international recognition for her short stories, which were anthologized in several collections.
Jadwiga moved to Urbana, IL in 2011 to live near family.
Her husband Warren R Maurer passed away June 5, 2013.
She is survived by her son Stephen M. Maurer of Berkeley, CA and her daughter Elizabeth T. Powers, son-in-law Nicholas Powers, and her grandchildren William and Katherine Powers, all of Urbana IL.
Graveside services will be held at 11 am. on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Friedens Cemetery, Hegins, with Rev. Warren Egebo officiating.
